At Canadian Wings of Rescue, we’re deeply grateful for the dedication and compassion of our network of volunteer pilots. These incredible individuals use their skills and aircraft to rescue injured, abused, and displaced animals, providing them with a chance at a better life. Today, we want to shine a spotlight on one of our standout volunteers, Dr. Robert Campbell, who has been a part of our mission for the past year.

Robert is not just any pilot—he’s a multifaceted hero. Based in Calgary, Alberta, with CYBW (also known as Springbank) as his home airport, Robert combines his flying expertise with his profession as a veterinary dentist & oral surgeon. His unique skill set is a perfect match for our organization, as he brings a deep understanding of animal care to every rescue mission he undertakes. Robert’s dual roles underscore his commitment to animal welfare, making him an invaluable asset to our team.

One of Robert’s favorite routes is from Springbank, Calgary (CYBW) to Campbell River, BC (CYBL). He relishes the breathtaking views of mountains and ocean, which he describes as “spectacular every single time.” This enthusiasm for flying mirrors his passion for helping animals, as each flight brings hope and healing to those in need.

Robert has volunteered to fly a husky pup, kittens, basset hound in his spare time and we’re so grateful to call him a member of the CWoR team.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Robert and all our dedicated volunteer pilots who make our mission possible. Their passion and commitment are essential to rescuing and caring for countless animals.

When an orphaned Sandhill Crane colt was found without its parents, every effort was made to give this little one a fighting chance.

Volunteer pilot @kai.salvini flew the young bird from Earlton to our wildlife partners at @woodlandswildlifesanctuary where a team was ready to provide the specialized care it needed.

Despite everyone`s best efforts, the crane sadly didn`t survive.

While this isn`t the ending any of us wanted, we believe these stories matter too. Behind a transport like this are volunteer staff and pilots, wildlife rehabilitators and their partners who generously give their time, skills, and hearts to help animals in need.

Not every life can be saved, but we believe every life is worth the effort.

Thank you to Kai and the team at Woodlands Wildlife Sanctuary for answering the call and giving this young crane every possible chance.

A transport with double the impact!

When a temporary foster could no longer keep them, 17 dogs, including 2 adults and 15 puppies, needed to be moved from northern Saskatchewan. Our partner, @northernanimalrescue , reached out to us to help make it happen.

Volunteer pilot @PaulRick26 stepped up to help, flying in 500 lbs of donated dog food to the community before flying the dogs out to a better future.

In remote northern communities, access to essential supplies like dog food can be more difficult and costly, making this delivery especially meaningful.

It’s a powerful example of making every kilometre flown count!

On this recent transport, volunteer pilot @whysocirrus22t, flew Rico, a beautiful golden, over the mountains to his new home with our partners at @goldenrescuecanada

To safely cross mountainous terrain, Paul used supplemental oxygen during parts of the approximately 1 hour and 20 minute flight. At higher altitudes, oxygen levels decrease, and pilots use oxygen to stay sharp and ensure safe decision-making in the cockpit.

For healthy dogs like Rico, short flights at these cabin altitudes are well tolerated without supplemental oxygen. Careful planning helps ensure every passenger — human and animal — travels safely.

Another rescue fight completed thanks to volunteer pilots who go the extra mile (and altitude) to help animals reach their second chances.

A huge thanks to Paul who is a long-time pilot with Canadian Wings of Rescue. We are so proud to have incredibly dedicated pilots like you to help us help more animals.

At Canadian Wings of Rescue, we connect volunteer pilots who believe in public benefit flying with rescues and wildlife organizations who need help moving animals safely — and this was a perfect example.

Originally transported by volunteer pilot @ClayBerndt to our partners at @TheOwlFoundation for specialized care, this incredible bird was ready for her next chapter.

A second volunteer pilot, Gerd W, then helped complete the journey, returning her to her home habitat in Kingston, ON for release back into the wild.

Her release was nothing short of beautiful.

Peregrine falcons are the fastest animals on Earth, reaching speeds of over 300 km/h in a dive.
